COMMIT Ministries works with Ethiopian ministry partner HOPE Enterprises Teams serve for two weeks at HOPE Enterprises facilities in either Dessie, Addis Ababa, or Gambela. We'll be involved in construction projects, food and medicine distribution, and build relationships with staff and students. HOPE Enterprises was founded in 1971 by Jack & Evangel Smith, missionaries working in Addis Ababa. The Smith's did many things for the poor and needy in the old center city of Addis Ababa including providing clothing and their, now famous, meal tickets for lunch. But the Smith's were not satisfied by having the people they ministered to be dependent and wanted to do something that would help them stand on their own. It was then that HOPE was established to serve not only basic needs, but also education, vocational training, and spiritual maturity. Since then, Hope has grown to establish and operate full time Grade Schools, Middle and University Schools as well as Vocational Training Centers at campuses in Addis Ababa, Dessie, and Gambela. The feeding centers and meal tickets that were started by the Smith's are still used and have become a widely known and embraced outreach program to the community. Ethiopia is recognized as being the first Christian nation in about 400AD, but the remants of the Communism of 50's is still felt today and the influence of Islam in this region is strong indeed and now are as many in number as Christians. Ethiopia also recently ended a devastating civil war with what is now Eritrea - a war that claimed the lives of almost one million people. Couple hese political events with the starvation that ravaged much of this country in the 80's and the tremendous needs are apparent. Yet behind the hunger, poverty, and lack of education the spiritual battle for Ethiopia rages. Join COMMIT in it's work with HOPE Enterprises! Check with us about plans for future trips to minister to these beautiful people and check for new postin3g for trips to Ethiopia on this page often! Our ministry teams will not only be involved in the construction of facilities, working in feeding programs, and vocational training to assist HOPE Enterprises with it's vision of creating economic self-sufficiency, but we'll be sharing the love of Jesus and the message of the "Good News" as we work and travel throughout many areas where there are spiritual needs and a hunger for the Gospel! |
