The Makawai Stream Alliance is monitoring water quality and stream biota (algae) in support of its efforts to restore ecological health to Waiahole Stream (see the Hihiwai Restocking Project). Water quality measurements [see data] include turbidity and total suspended solids (TSS). These data have been summarized through April 2001.
Starting on August 3, 1999, temperature [see data] recording devices were installed in the stream. The health of the stream and, by extension, the health of the ahupua`a requires that adequate water flow be allocated to Waiahole Stream (see "Waiahole Ditch Case"). These water quality measurements from Waiahole should be of interest throughout Ko`olaupoko because this stream is now receiving water previously diverted to Central O`ahu and flow is stronger than in almost any other stream in the district. Other than the mauka diversion, the stream itself is little modified. Thus, water quality values obtained here will be useful for making comparisons with results from other community groups monitoring streams in other na ahupua`a o ko`olau.

Water samples were generally collected from the "pool" shown here just off the roots on the left side of the picture. Algae were scraped off boulders comprising a small dam on this auwai located above the lo`i kalo. The loose boulder dam diverts some flow into a smaller auwai that serves the mauka lo`i kalo.

| Water quality Station 001A was located on Waiahole Stream roughly midway between Sta. 001 and Sta. 002. Water samples were collected less frequently at this station. | ||

Water quality Station 002 was located on Waiahole Stream a short distance upstream from the confluence with Waianu Stream. This station corresponded roughly with stream algae Station 3.

Water samples at Station 003 were collected at the upstream side of the Kamehameha Highway bridge over Waiahole Stream. Station 003 is shown here in April 1999 from the right stream bank.
