221st Birthday

Hope you had a great Marine Corps Birthday and Veteran's Day holiday. Another new computer virus alert, results of the October golf tournament, and a reminder of the informal luncheon this Friday are the only news items. A call for volunteer marshals for the Hawaiian Open and opinions about sending Christmas cards using snail mail are included in this issue.

NOVEMBER LUNCHEON-

The initial informal luncheon for 1843ers will be held at the Hickam AFB Officer's Club on Friday, 15 Nov 96. We will block off an area on the lanai and meet between 1130 and 1300. Bring any old photos you have of past 1843 events and I will try to get them scanned for the newsletter and home page. If you want the photos back, bring a SASE or wait for the next luncheon. Karen

SPORTS NEWS

Harry Minakami won the October Hoonanea Golf tournament with a net 72. He shot the net par score at the Navy Marine Golf Course on 29 October 1996. The long course and fast greens humbled the rest of the field Jeff Ching had a net 73 and was the only guy to challenge the winner. Net scores for 1843 people were: Bob Antonio 75, Tom Ching 77, Bill Harrington 77, Thanh Nguyen 80, Tad Kaida 84, Bill Cabanlit 84, Mel Kong 85, Ron Nishimoto 86 and Ken Ki 89. Lots of pupus and drinks after the round were enjoyed by all participants. November's golf tournament will be held at Hickam AFB Golf Course on Wednesday, 27 Nov 96. Ken Ki <Ken_Ki@hula.net> is this month's tournament chairman and will be calling you to reserve tee times. Come out and have some fun and meet with the gang.

RETIREE NEWS

Hawaii Film Festival is on this week. Check your newspaper for schedules. This is a great festival and can be your chance to see the newly renovated Hawaii Theatre for free.

Marshalls are wanted for the 1997 Hawaiian Open to be held in Feb 97 at the Waialae Golf Course. Call Tom Ching at 395-3593 if interested. This is your chance to see your favorite golf pro up close and personal. Maybe even get to meet Tiger Woods.

- OPINIONS -

Sending Christmas cards to all your friends during the Post Office's busiest time of the year is overloading the system. I can see sending gifts to friends away but sending a card to a person that sits next to you in the office or that you see everyday is a bit much. Personally wishing your friend a Merry Christmas is nicer. Sending Seasons Greeting via EMail should be an ecologically better way by saving the trees and fuel needed to transport the card. What's your opinion?

<MOMOHARK@hqpacaf.af.mil>

I TRIED SENDING THIS TO YOU, TOM, BUT I GUESS IT DIDN'T GET TO YOU IN TIME FOR YOUR NL25. I HOPE THIS E-MAIL FINDS YOU IN GOOD SPIRITS!

The phone scam works basically like this: You get home and notice that the message light is blinking on your answering machine. You listen to the message, which has several wrinkles, but the best one is the caller asks you to call a number beginning with area code 809 to receive information about a family member who has been ill. (They may also tell you someone has been arrested, died, you have won a wonderful prize, etc.)

In any event, concerned or curious, you make the call. Sometimes the phone will be answered by a person who claims to speak broken English. (The idea is to keep you on the line to build upcharges.) Or, sometimes you will just get a long recorded message. The bottom lines is, when your phone bill comes, you see this incredible charge, oftentimes more than $100.00 dollars!

Crooks are using the 809 numbers as "pay-per-calls" and to get around the US Regulations and 900 number blocking. Every time you call the number, they get a greatly inflated rebate from >the foreign phone company. Since the 809 numbers are in the Caribbean, they aren't bound by US 900# regulations that require them to warn you of the charge and rate involved, and also to provide a time period during which you may terminate the call without being charged.

The newest twist to this scam is to page people using the 809 numbers. With the new area code changes, people unknowingly are returning these calls. When the bill comes, there are HUGE charges for the calls.

My suggestion is that no matter how you get the message, if you are asked to call a number with an 809 area code that you don't recognize, DON'T RETURN THE CALL! It's bad enough that the criminal is invading your privacy, don't let them invade your wallet as well!

Scams of this type are extremely hard to prosecute and since you did actually make the call, neither your local phone company or your long distance carrier will want to get involved. They'll tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You end up trying to deal (over the phone) with a foreign company that feels they have done no wrong. It can turn into a real nightmare!

TSgt Schweitzer PACAF CSS provided other area codes to be wary.

As the self appointed PACAF CSS Hoax Debunker, I called the National Fraud Information Center, which confirmed this as true. Also, there are rumors that there are additional Caribbean area codes coming on-line soon, which could also be used for this scam. Here's a list:
Area Code Country
242 Bahamas
246 Barbados
264 Anguilla
268 Antigua and Barbuda
284 British Virgin Islands
345 Cayman Islands
441 Bermuda
473 Grenada

758 St. Lucia
767 Dominica
784 St. Vincent/Grenadines
787 Puerto Rico
868 Trinidad and Tobago
869 St. Kitts and Nevis
876 Grenada

However, the NFIC could not confirm that these area codes are being used for this scam at thistime. Let's be careful out there.

Tom and Judy,

I enjoyed having lunch with both of you at the Hickam OC last week. Maybe we should add a monthly luncheon to the 1843 social activities list. I'm curious about the Washington Post article on Nexis-Lexis. If you have it in your computer, can you e-mail it to me. Unfortunately, I am still not on the internet.

Bill Selvey

<bselvey@pmrf.navy.mil>

This came in on e-mail this morning.
I am forwarding it just in case you may not have received this information

Bill Selvey

Hello, everyone! This message is extremely important. It is abo a very highly intelligent virus that is being spread nationwide called "Good Times". Once you have read this message, please forward to anyone you care about.

There is a computer virus that is being sent across the Internet. If you receive an email message with the subject line "Good Times", DO NOT read the message, DELETE it immediately. Please read the messages below.

Some miscreant is sending email under the title "Good Times" nationwide, if you get anything like this, DON'T DOWN LOAD THE FILE! It has a virus that rewrites your hard drive, obliterating anything on it.

The FCC released a warning last Wednesday concerning a matter of major importance to any regular user of the Internet. Apparently a new computer virus has been engineered by a user of AMERICA ON LINE that is unparalleled in its destructive capability. Other more well-known viruses such as "Stoned", "Airwolf" and "Michaelangelo" pale in comparison to the prospects of this newest creation by a warped mentality. What makes this virus so terrifying, said the FCC, is the fact that no program needs to be exchanged for a new computer to be infected. It c an be spread through the existing email systems of the Internet.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY FILE NAMED PKZIP300 REGARDLESS OF THE
EXTENSION

We work closely with the military and received this message from a very reliable source in DC this morning.

A NEW Trojan Horse Virus has emerged on the internet with th name PKZIP300.ZIP, so named as to give the impression that this fil is a new version of the PKZIP software used to "ZIP" (compress)files. DO NOT DOWNLOAD this file under any circumstances!!! If you install or expand this file, the virus WILL wipe your hard disk clean and affect modems at 14.4 and higher. This is an extremely destructive virus and there is NOT yet a way of cleaning up this one. (Editor's note: Bill provided virus details which can be provided on request)

Please correct Byron's email address from n221@pnet16.navy.mil to n212@pnet16.navy.mil. In other words, Byron now works with Cal and I.

So far I like this e-mail, much more friendly to use, I think more versatile too. Only thing I noticed so far, it seems slower. My daughter sent email me to both accounts. I don't know when the ATT arrived but the Juno arrive about 1/2 hr to an hr after I checked both systems, and the ATT already had it.

How is everything? Everything is fine here.

In response to Bob's piece:

I heard that lexus-nexus was a you-dumb-sucker-back-in-your-face-scam that actually tricks you into giving them your SSN and name. I don't understand the Ed. note that says,"before providing your SSN be careful." Shouldn't it say, "NEVER give your SSN." That's just like saying, "be careful when giving somebody Aids" or "be careful when pointing a loaded gun to your head." To test out my theory I used Tom Ching's name and SSN.

If you REALLY want to get your name off of every-single database in existence (including junk mail lists), just send me five bucks and I can do it for you. I don't mind being inundated with requests.

Take it easy,

<LKouke@aol.com>

By chance one of my projects dealt with coordinating RFSs with DISA- PAC. Bill Harrington was at the other end of the line and he mentioned you were the president and chief executive officer of the 1843d Newsletter! He sent the lastest edition to me and I'm amazed of the many 43ders still keeping in touch. Just wanted to let you know I'm still out there and wanted to pass along my address (LKOUKE@AOL.COM). Like Joe Johnson I was in the wideband section from 84 to 87. Went to the 1836 in Lindsey, GE and then on to Peterson AFB, CO. Left the AF in 92 and stayed in the area working for Kaman Sciences.

I'm a project manager there and we provide E&I services for AF Space Command. We basically follow the E&I approach and service sites around the world. I've been to some interesting places like Thule, Shemya, Turkey, Australia and many other sites. The workload is fairly heavy and diverse. Steve Crowe (worked in the QRT section) will be joining us soon and I'll let him know about your newsletter.

Its a small world in cyber space. I'd like to get on your mailing list and keep in touch with the 1843d family. I'll keep you posted on our ski conditions and aspens have already turned to gold. Don't forget to disconnect your garden hoses or the freeze might burst your water pipe!!!!!!

I saw two movies recently. LAST MAN STANDING is an action movie based on the Japanese movie YOJIMBO. Bruce Willis is great as a hired gun in the 1920s. Lots of gore and shooting. FIRST WIVES CLUB is a story of 3 women who meet after their friend commits suicide because of her husband divorcing her. They form a club and get revenge on their ex-husbands. I don't think I was the only guy in the theatre feeling uncomfortable. Don't see it if you are worried about your wife getting ideas. See any good movies lately???

Here is an article that is circulating at our Army installation. It is self-explanatory. If you don't want personal information to be available to outsiders to commit fraud or harm against you, call this company LEXIS-NEXIS
and have them remove your name from their database.

There was a TV newspot on this company which is working through the Internet. The newscaster asked if people were aware that a company is providing personal information on virtually anyone to everyone who can
access the Internet. I think there is ample cause for concern if the subject is on national TV.

Please add it to your next newsletter.

Bob

EDITORS NOTE:

Received the following and thought it was worth forwarding on to all of you.

Your name, social security number, current address, previous addresses, mother's maiden name, birth date and other personal information are now available to anyone with a credit card through a new Lexis database called
P-Trax. As I am sure you are aware, this information could be used to commit credit card fraud or otherwise allow someone else to use your identity.

You can have your name and information removed from this list by making a telephone request. Call (800)543-6862, select option 4 and then option 3 ("all other questions") and tell the representative answering that you
wish to remove your name from the P-trax database. You may also send a fax to (513) 865-7360, or physical mail to LEXIS-NEXIS / P.O. Box 933 / Dayton, Ohio 45401-0933. Sending physical mail to confirm your name has been removed is always a good idea.

As word of the existence of this database has spread on the net, Lexis-Nexis has been inundated with calls, and has set up a special set of operators to handle the volume. In addition, Andrew Bleh (rhymes with "Play") is a manager responsible for this product, and is the person to whom complaints about the service could be directed. He can be reached at the above 800 number. Ask for extension 3385. According to Lexis, the manager responsible is Bill Fister at extension 1364.

I called this morning and had my name removed. (Ed Note: Before providing your SSN, be careful) The representative will need your name and social security number to remove you from the list. I suggest that we inundate these people with requests to remove our info from the list and forward this e-mail to everyone we know.

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I am back from the wilds of Kauai. This along with problems with my internet provider has caused a delay of this newsletter. Not much going on, a safety bulletin from Bob Antonio about trucks with bed liner and filling of gas containers in them. Announcement for a job with DISA from Bill Harrington may be of interest to some of our readers. We have a nice note from Jim Todt who provided us some info on one of our past commanders, Col. Fred Brehm. We have the results on our August golf tournament and a change in the location and day of our September tournament in our Sports News.

I'm back now so you can start sending the new of the old gang to me instead of John Bretz. I visited Col. Fred Brehm (ret'd) our 1843EIG Commander in 1977-79 in Gulfport, MS. He is in bad health but still active and gave me a good tour of Biloxi, Gulfport area. The place is really "booming" with casinos and the New Orleans crowd. Also, the southern Alabama, Mississippi and panhandle of Florida. He (Col Brehm) would like
anyone of the old gang to visit him. His address is:

Col. Fred Brehm (Ret'd)
10 Independence Drive
Gulfport, MS 39507

Call him first at 1 (601) 736-4019. He spoke highly of the 1843rd and the work we done. I've known him since 1947 and know he means it. Couldn't find Ray Boots cause he was here. Seems to me that was a smart move.

Here is a noteworthy input for your newsletter. Some people who own trucks may benefit from this safety alert notice.

SAFETY ALERT: PICKUP TRUCKS WITH BED LINERS

I want to relate an incident that happened to an individual the other day. He was filling a small gas can that was inside the bed of his pick-up which has a bed liner in it. The gasoline spontaneously ignited, burning him in the process.

The investigation determined that this was caused by static electricity buildup from the plastic bed liner. I have since learned that this is not uncommon, and in fact there are two technical bulletins out on this. One is from Ford Motor Corp. and the other is from Standard Oil Co. The recommendations on both are that you should never fill a gas can in the bed of a truck with a bed liner in it. Place the container on the ground to fill it. The Ford bulletin also stated that placing a rubber mat under the bed liner would alleviate this problem; however, the friend of mine had already done that and the gasoline still ignited. This leaves the only way to fill gas cans is to place them on the ground.

WARNING - CHEVRON ISSUES GAS-CAN ALERT

Chevron USA has reported several instances of metal gas-cans exploding while being filled in the backs of pickup trucks at service stations. In a warningpublished in Chevron's Marketing Bulletin 36-1904, Chevron said the insulated effect of the plastic liners found in the back of many pickup trucks prevents the static charge generated by gasoline flowing into a metal can from grounding. As the charge builds, it can create a static spark between the can and the gas nozzle. Chevron is advising that all cans should be placed on the ground away from vehicles and people when being filled.

WARNING - DEATH/ACCIDENT ON REFUELING CANS INSIDE BED LINERS

My daughter, an electrical engineer who is attending a seminar in Boston this week, called me this AM to have me alert her father of possible death/injury when fueling a gas can that is sitting in the back of a pickup truck with a bed liner. (We own a truck with a dealer supplied bed liner and have boats, ATVs, and a lawn mower which would mandate fueling a gas can). A flame specialist at this seminar told me that there have been 23 injuries/deaths because of pickup truck owners fueling a gas can/tank that is sitting in the back of their pick-up
truck without removing it. Apparently the bed liners do not provide a ground and the fuel generates static electricity that can cause the fumes to ignite. This specialist said that there was pressure on the bed liner manufacturers to put a warning label on their product. With the selling of so many pick-ups, of which many customers buy a dealer installed liner, I thought it best to draw attention to this claim for further investigation.

Hi Tom,

Just a note to let you know that I'm receiving the 1843rd newsletters and am really enjoying the updated info on old acquaintances. I'll forward the letters to Jim (Todt) when he returns from ZI.

Am getting along OK but having a lot of trouble with arthritis. Spend a lot of time on housing improvements when I'm not bothered by it.

Thanks for the letters and hope all is well with you.

John

TIN CUP

It's a great movie, especially for golfers. Kevin Costner and Renee Russo are great together. My favorite is Cheech Marin who is funny as caddie and friend to the driving range pro who tries to win the big one, the US Open. See Ben Wood's column in Saturday's Star Bulletin for great review of this movie.

THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, MAPPED OUT

So much has happened over the last 3,000 years, and now you can see the latest bits for yourself with an interactive online World History Chart, a "synchronoptic" display of human history since about the year 1000. (We could have really used this back in high school.) Follow the links to HyperHistory for the full-fledged Netscape 2.0 experience, then follow the map to your heart's content, viewing information by people, events, civilizations, or geography. This is really, really cool.
