Read Properties

HELP Read™ displays your Reading Volume, Pitch, and Speed settings while the text is actively being read. The same controls are found in the Read drop-down menu.

Control for highlighting Sentences or Words is also displayed during your Active reading session and under the Read menu.

Note: any changes you make during an active reading begin following the completion of the sentence you are on.

Step 1 Increase Volume & Speed: You can grab and move the slide bar buttons or click on the little arrow buttons to adjust the settings.

  • The highest Volume setting matches the speaker setting already on your computer.  The primary reason we added volume adjustment was for different users of the same computer.
  • Speed is set at about 200-250 words per minute when you start using HELP Read™ because that is the average person’s independent reading speed (about one page-per-minute). Most people talk and can understand what others say at around 500 words per minute.  Because HELP Read™ says and shows what you are reading, increased speed with comprehension can be achieved comfortably by many (and over time by almost everyone).

Step 2 Adjust Pitch up and down: Pitch is an important adjustment for reading attention. Those we have talked with about this adjustment indicate that they listen closer to the voice if it is adjusted in pitch a certain way.  Not necessarily to a pleasant voice as you might think, but to one that draws curiosity or focus.

Step 3 Highlight Words: Switch the Highlight control to Words instead of Sentences if you are using HELP Read™ to sharpen your reading skills, learn the English language, or share symptoms of a reading challenge such as Dyslexia.
