However, during the second world war, Leipzig was destroyed by terrible Allied (American and British) air bombing. This was very tragic because Leipzig was such an exquisite historical city. Many of the homes, churches and concert halls where J.S. Bach lived, wrote music and performed were destroyed. Many thousands of people lost their lives through this senseless bombing. However, the one thing that remains and couldn't be destroyed by this bombing was the beautiful music of J.S. Bach which remains a glory to the entire world and not only Germany.

  • Recently, the APEC group of nations met in the Philippines. During and after the APEC meeting, President Clinton of the United States met with Premier Hashimoto of Japan to discuss the problem over American troops in Okinawa. The stationing of troops in Okinawa has been a major stumbling block between the United States and Japan. Earlier this year, there was the terrible "rape" incident involving a young Japanese underage girl. That incident caused a lot of very bad feelings to erupt among the Okinawans. The Japanese government seemed to take a long time to come to a decision to demand the reduction of troops in Okinawa. However, this week both the Americans and the Japanese representatives agreed to a reduction in the number of troops in Okinawa. It was suggested that the American troops be moved to mainland Japan but Premier Hashimoto said this wasn't a good idea. This decision has helped to improve American-Japanese relations...at least for the short run.

23.) A major stumbling block to improved US-Japan relations has been solved.

  1. President Clinton decided to keep troops in Okinawa.
  2. The Okinawans have forgotten about the "rape" incident.

  • According to a survey among Gakushuin students, it seems that most students agree that pocketbells are a very useful tool; especially for college students. However, many of these Gakushuin students felt that the young junior high and high school students use pocketbells because they are lonely at school, especially those students who attend school far from their homes. Also, according to some of the Gakushuin students surveyed they seemed to think that pocketbells were just another "fad". However, a minority of the students surveyed thought that pocketbells were part of a future trend. This minority group thought that pocketbells were similar to telephones and much easier to use. Some of the students explained how the junior high school and high school students were mostly girls. One boy undertaking the survey stated that if he met a girl at a party and got her pocketbell number that he would send her a message. If the girl answered then it met she liked him. Unfortunately, according to this boy, nobody ever returned his messages. Poor boy!!! But, the same boy said that at least the girl didn't have to face him to turn him down. So the boy thought that although he was turned down by the girl(s), his feelings weren't hurt so much...he was just unlucky!

  • In the United States baseball has been called the "national past time". The New York Yankees have won the most World Series in the history of American baseball. During the early 1950's, the New York Yankees won the World Series 5 years in a row; from 1949 through 1953. They were called the "Bronx Bombers" because they had so much home run power. However, after winning the Series in the 1960's and 1970's the New York Yankees seemed to have lost their power. However, this year the New York Yankees again won the World Series from the Atlanta Braves but this years team wasn't renown for its home run hitting. Cecil Fielder, who played in Japan for the Hanshin Tiger baseball team was traded from the Detroit Tigers helped the Yankees win the world series. Cecil Fielder is the most successful baseball player ever to play in Japan. Speaking of Japan, the Yomiuri Giants have a similar history as the New York Yankees. For many years, the only strong team in Japan seemed to be the Tokyo Giants with Oh and Nagashima. This year Nagashima managed the Giants into the Japan Series but, unfortunately, unlike the New York Yankees, the Tokyo Giants lost to the Kobe Orix. One good thing about this series was the competition between two great young players: Ichiro of Kobe and Matsui of Tokyo. So it seems that only one of the old warrior teams was able to get to the top of the heap and that was the New York Yankees.

27.) The Yankees of today aren't like the former Bronx Bombers.

  1. The New York Yankees lost the world series to a Atlanta.
  2. Cecil Fielder plays for the Hanshin Tigers in Osaka.
  3. The New York Yankees lost 5 world series from 1949-1953
  4. The Braves play in Miami, Florida

28.)Only one old warrior team won their series.

  1. Nagashima plays and manages the Tokyo Giants.
  2. The Kobe Orix team has never won a Japan Series
  3. Cecil Fielder wants to come back to Japan
  4. The New York Yankees traded Fielder to Detroit.

  • Many economists are worried about the long-term effects of the recession on Japan. Many companies have been forced to downsize. This usually means that many older employees who expected lifetime employment have either lost their jobs or have had their salaries reduced by a large percentage-sometimes as much as half. The remaining workers are sometimes very worried about their jobs and find themselves working twice as hard because although some workers have lost their jobs the amount of work hasn't decreased. Therefore, the workers who remain often are under an enormous amount of stress from the increased pressure to do the same amount of work with fewer people. Even after having downsized, many companies are still having trouble coming out of the recession. Although companies are hiring students again, they are not hiring as many as they did before the collapse of the "bubble". Many young people are also questioning the future of the lifetime employment system in Japan and some college graduates from the not so famous universities can be found slinging hamburgers at MacDonalds. The outlook for future work at major corporations doesn't seem to be as bright as it used to be.

29.)Downsizing seem to be hardest on older employees.

  1. Many companies are hiring more employees than before the bubble.
  2. Employeesat companies are happy to have their jobs.
  3. All young people are finding it easy to find jobs wherever they want.
  4. After downsizing, most companies no longer have problems.

30.) Graduates from college cannot always get a good job.

  1. Corporations can still guarantee everyone lifetime employment.
  2. Employees who were not downsized feel no pressure.
  3. After downsizing, the remaining employees receive a bonus.
  4. Downsizing means the amount of work decreases
