Your original Executive Report with no corrections

A comparative study of the "Position of Women in Japan and the United States".

Part 1: Executive Overview

What's the differences of positon of women in both countries? We are studying the differences of women's position between Japan and U.S. We can see both comparisons and contrasts. At this point, focusing on differences of two countries, we'd like to search current problems.

Nowadays, the position of women is changing gradually. The rate of women having their own job is increasing. Then, what kind of job are opened to these women? For example, such as taxi drivers, construction workers, and the other jobs which was set for men's field. And not only in physical ways but also in political field using their authorities. At the same time, the traditional values such as women should stay home and do the housework, to born and raise children are changing too. Moreover, women are tend to marry in their late 20's or even some of them refuse to marry. However, are they really getting equal treatments as men? Are they really satisfied with the condition which they are in? We are going to discuss and search the following problems that have occurred from these point of views.

  1. A discussion of treatment women are getting, starting from finding jobs until their retirement in any kind of jobs.
  2. A comparison about an idea of marriage and divorce between Japan and U.S. where Japan is negative about divorce while U.S. is positive as you can see from the rate.
  3. A difference of "Women's Liberation" movement including historical background and present condition.
  4. How the law is protecting rights of women in both countries. We would like to focus especially on the problems of sexual harassment.

The position of women in U.S. is going ahead comparing with Japan. It is sure that Japan will go after this. However even in U.S., the situation is still in difficulty. The women aren't treated equally yet. That is because men do understand the women coming out into their working society, but they still refuse to share the housework. This is unfair and not only the women but also the men must change their way of thinking and acting. The whole society must change for remaking the new systems.

Grammatical corrections and comments
Suggested Correction Short grammatical or logical explanation
What are the differences in the position of women in both countries? We are studying about the differences in the position of women between Japan and the U.S. We can see both similarities and differences. At this point, focusing on the differences of the two countries, we'd like to research current problems. .

** "differences in the position of women" is plural.

** You need the word "about" to clarify your sentence.

** Similarities/differences are better choices of words.

** You must be careful to use the definite article "the" in "the differences". This is difficult but necessary.

** The word "research" is a better word for what you are doing than is "search". Check your dictionary.

Currently, the position of women is gradually changing. The rate of women having their own job is increasing. Then, what kind of jobs are opened to these women? For example, are jobs such as taxi drivers, construction workers, and other jobs which have been men's field open for women? We mean not only in physical ways but also in political fields, where men can use their power and authority. At the same time, the traditional values such as women staying home, doing the housework, bearing and raising children are changing too. Moreover, women tend to marry in their late 20's and some even refuse to marry. However, are they really getting equal treatment as are men? Are they really satisfied with the condition in which they are in? We are going to discuss and search the following problems that have occurred from these point of views.

** "Currently" is a better, more businesslike word than is "Nowadays".

** "gradually changing" places the adverb "gradually" before the verb "changing"...probably reads better but is debatable.

** Use plural when referring to "jobs".

** The sentence starting with "For example" was not a complete sentence nor was the sentence starting "And not only in". You must have a verb.

** When you want to list a series of items with a verb as in "should stay home, do the housework", it is better to use the "ing" ending as shown.

** "are tend" should read "tend"

** "even" should be moved "some of them even" should be simplified to "some even"

** "treatment" is singular.

** Even though I corrected your mistakes I was able to understand what you wanted to say and THAT IS very important.

  1. A discussion of the treatment women are getting, starting from finding jobs until their retirement in any kind of job.
  2. A comparison of the idea of marriage and divorce between Japan and U.S. where Japan is negative about divorce while the U.S. is positive as you can see from the rate.
  3. The difference of the "Women's Liberation" movement including the historical background and the present condition.
  4. How the law is protecting the rights of women in both countries. We would like to focus especially on the problems of sexual harassment.

** Be careful on the usage of the definite article "the"

**....."any kind" is a singular statement, therefore "jobs" must be "job".

** "A comparison of the idea" is better than "A comparison about an idea".

** With most countries (e.g. Japan), the definite article "the" is not used. "The Japan" is incorrect. However, there are exceptions and "the U.S." is one of the exceptions as is "The United Kingdom but NOT 'The England..England, only is correct'".

The position of women in the U.S. is further ahead in comparison with Japan. It appears that Japan will go after this trend. However even in the U.S., the situation is still difficult. Women aren't treated equally yet. That is because men do understand women coming out into their working society, but they still refuse to share the housework. This is unfair and not only women but also men must change their way of thinking and acting. The entire society should change in order to make new systems.

** "further ahead" means that the U.S. is ahead of Japan. I assume this is your meaning. "going ahead" implies that Japan and the U.S. are in a race and that the U.S. is pulling ahead. I do not think this is what you mean.

** You cannot say "It is sure" because no one knows if Japanese women will follow their American sisters. A better expression is "It appears that..." or .."It seems that".

** "Women" is a plural group word as is "Men". We usually don't say "The men are stronger than are the women". You would usually say "Men are stronger than women"...In your "executive summary", you are referring to "all men" and "all women"; not to a specific group. It is customary to not use "the" when talking about "men" or "women" in a generalized manner. However, you can use the definite article "the" in circumstances when you are talking about "women" or "men" as a distinct group. For example, if you were living on a farm and it was getting late, you might say "The men are very late tonight".

** ". The entire society should change in order to make new systems." Simplifies and clarifies "The whole society must change for remaking the new systems." Additionally, while you may believe that society "must change", you can only say that society "should change". This is softer and you have not yet stated how society "must change

Questions for further research by your group and comments on your Executive Report

The following questions and comments should help you to continue and complete your report. If you wish to discuss any of these questions with the instructor, please contact him by e-mail. In addition to the questions listed here, you can, of course, think of your questions to complete you work.

If you use an article from a magazine, newspaper or online (Internet) source, you need to identify where that source came from. We will talk more about "sources of information" in class meetings.

Are there any political organizations in Japan that are organized for the improvement of the position of women in Japanese society?
Why are women choosing to marry later in life or to not marry at all? Try and find some reliable resources in Japan that discuss this issue. For example, Japanese women's magazines, or Japanese government surveys that analyze social changes.
What do women think about the tradition of "serving tea" at Japanese companies. Do women believe men should share in this task? Is this a minor problem. In the United States, perhaps, men and women often share in duties such as making the coffee.
Based on your research, do you think Japanese women want to be "equal" in everything with men? What do most women believe "equality" means? Does "equality only relate to working women; or are Japanese housewives demanding more "equality" in the home?
