Japanese Influence on the West?

Part 1: Executive Overview

We studied about Japanese influence on the west. Now Japan and the west have a great influence on each other. Japan has influenced on the west by its own traditional culture and by transformation of western culture. When does it begin and in which area Japan has good or bad influence? The first contact of Japan and west was Nagasaki business. To do business with Japan, some foreigners visited Japan and by these people west could know about Japan. Those days information about Japan was very small, and the influence was almost none.

There were the effects of Japanese art since this time. Even though it didn't work on the real life, it effected on their culture. Japanese arts as UKIYOE were brought to the western country, and effected on Impressionists- Gogho,Mannet...-Besides this, Japanese garden, pictures, BONSAI, Kimono and so on, there have been western people who loved Japanese culture.

Since Meiji era, Japan came to include western things and assimilated with them. They included even empirenism. Thus, Japan and western countries got war. Until the end of World War 2, Japan didn't effect on them but only be effected. At last, What Japan influenced on them is just the damage of war.

We will look at the positive aspects of Japanese economy as well as the negative ones. A high economic growth rate in Japan has resulted a great impact on the west. Modern civilization put a lot of emphasis on efficiency and Japan did the same.

However, Japanese haven't invented anything new. Cars, cameras and even computer games weren't invented by Japanese, but we certainly spreaded them all over the world . This is because Japanese were able to produce what consumers wanted. Japanese have been pursuing the efficiency, such as low-priced cars and Walkman which are only for playing tapes and nothing else and consumers accepted our way .

However, Japanese economy which has grown too rapidly, overpowered the western industries. Moreover, some Japanese companies purchased land and painting for investment. Many of the valuable paintings are being kept in warehouses instead of being displayed in museums. Because the Japanese economy grew so rapidly the western countries have suffered a heavy loss. It's no wonder the Japanese have provoked their hostility.

Japan has become to have voice in the worldwide affairs after it gained its enormous economic power. Today our country is playing quite an important role in keeping the balance of power between the world. To realize the "New World Order" as Bush proposed, we must give full play to our economic and military power in cooperation with the United States and European countries. We must join forces with ANICs(Asian newly industrialized countries) and deal with "dangerous" countries such as China, North Korea, and Arabian countries. Our economic power and high technology enabled us to have this political influence over the world.

Today the relationship between human and nature is something we all should consider seriously since environmental pollution has become a global problem. Japanese harmonic attitude towards nature under the influence of Shinto, Buddhism(especially Zen Buddhism), and Chinese philosophies such as Taoism are now focused on by the people in the west. All kinds of martial arts are now very popular around the world as they are good for both physical and mental training.

Our conclution is that Japan has influenced the west in many areas and will cintinue to do so. With advanced technology, such as Internet, it will become easier to exchange information. As a result, Japanese culture and western culture will mix creating a new culture.

Suggested Correction Short grammatical or logical explanation
We are studying about the Japanese influence on the west. Now Japan and the west greatly influence each other . Japan has influenced the west by its own traditional culture and through the transformation of western culture. When did it begin and in which areas was Japan's influence good or bad? The first contact between Japan and the west was with businessmen in Nagasaki. To do business with Japan, some foreigners visited Japan and through these people the west learned about Japan. In those days information about Japan was limited, so that the influence was almost none-existent. **"studied" is the past tense...but you "are studying" .. your report is not completed yet. You should use the "present progressive"

** "greatly influence on the west" simplifies your meaning and is clear. Also, this structure goes with "Now" which means "at the present time"

** "on the west" is incorrect.."the west" is ok.

** "through the transformation" ..through is better than "by" and you need the definite article "the" because you are talking about a particular thing..."the transformation of the west"

** "did begin" is past because you are writing about a past event..e.g. when did this influence begin?

** "area" should be plural "areas" ..."was Japan's influence" again is past tense...

** "between" is the correct word. e.g. "The first meeting of Clinton and Hashimoto" is acceptable but using "The first meeting between Clinton and Hashimoto" is better. It is very clear.

** "west", as used, is a definite thing..therefore, you need "the"

** "Nagasaki business" is not clear English..

** "through these people" and not "by..."

** "learned" and not "could know"...as much as possible use simple words..simplify!simplify!

** "was limited" means the same as "very small" but is shorter and clearer"

** the last part of the sentence depends on the first part of the sentence "...Japan was limited". If you wish to connect the "dependent" sentence you cannot use "and"...you should use "so that" or "because of that"

** "none-existent" is the word you are looking for..."none" gives the reader the meaning but is not used often in English in this way.

Japanese art has influenced the west since this time. Even though it didn't work on the real life, it influenced their culture. Japanese arts such as UKIYOE were brought to western countries , and influenced the Impressionists- such as Van Gogh and Manet. Besides this, the Japanese garden, pictures, Bonsai, Kimono and so on, have influenced western people who loved Japanese culture. **Try and avoid using "There were" when it is clear what the subject is..in this case "Japanese art". Use the main point as the subject.

** "influenced" is better than "effects"

** You need "such as" and not just "as" or "like"..You can write "Japanese arts like Ukiyoe.." instead of using "just as".

** Although you use "western countries" as a definite meaning, it is preferable not to use "the" because you are not speaking of a particular "western country". This is not a fixed rule..some writers might use "the" but it reads better without "the"...and "western countries" is not a definite thing such as "the United States".

** "such as" impressionists such as....see previous notes on "such as"

** "the Japanese garden"..a definite type of garden

** "Bonsai" should not be all capitals...you can type it as "Bonsai" or "bonsai"..but not "BONSAI".

** "have influenced" in your sentence is clear. Don't use "there is" "there have been" when it is clear who or what the subject or object is in a sentence. "The Renaissance influenced the Christian Reformation". Keep sentences as simple as possible!!!!

Since the Meiji era, Japan has included and assimilated western things. They included even empiricism. Thus, Japan and western countries became involved in war. Until the end of World War 2, Japan didn't effect western countries but only were effected. What Japan influenced on them was only war damage.

**"Meiji era" is a definite thing "the"

** "has included and assimilated" is very simple. Remember to simplify as much as possible.

** "got war" is weak..."became involved in" shows a process and is clear.

** You wrote that until the end of World War 2 Japan didn't effect western countries. But, this is not true, I believe. The Japanese helped end western imperialism, especially by defeating the British, the Dutch and the Portuguese in Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and Macao. Perhaps you should think a little more about this. The influence of Japan on the west was not only "the damage of the war". For example, the Japanese defeat of the western nations in China, effectively, ended western direct influence in China since the 1840's Opium war between China and Britain.

We will look at the positive aspects of the Japanese economy as well as the negative ones. A high economic growth rate in Japan has resulted in a great impact on the west. Modern civilization put a lot of emphasis on efficiency and Japan did the same.

**"Japanese economy" is a definite thing...ned "the"

** "in" is required. "has resulted" usually needs "in"..e.g Michael Jordan's return to the Chicago Bulls has resulted in the Bulls becoming champions again.

However, the Japanese haven't invented anything new. Cars, cameras and even computer games weren't invented by the Japanese, but we certainly spread them all over the world . This is because the Japanese were able to produce what consumers wanted. The Japanese have been pursuing efficiency, such as low-priced cars and the Walkman (which is only for playing tapes and nothing else) and consumers accepted our way .

**You need to use "the", definite article for Japanese and Walkman, since these are definite things.

** "Walkman" is singular...need is...also, to be clear, you should make "(which.....else) a parenthetical phrase because it only refers to the Walkman and not to the other point "low-priced cars"

However, the Japanese economy which has grown too rapidly, overpowered the western industries.

** You say "the western countries have suffered a heavy loss." You need to explain how the western countries have suffered a heavy loss and how the improved Japanese economy has caused this loss. It may be that the Japanese economy has not created the "heavy loss".

Japan has grown to have a voice in worldwide affairs after it gained its enormous economic power. Today our country is playing quite an important role in keeping the world's balance of power. To realize the "New World Order" as President Bush proposed, we must give full play to our economic and military power in cooperation with the United States and European countries. We must join forces with ANICs(Asian newly industrialized countries) and deal with potentially "dangerous" countries such as China, North Korea, and several Arabian countries. Our economic power and high technology enabled us to have this political influence over the world.

** "has grown to have" is better than "has become to have" ... your meaning was clear with "become" but the English usage is awkward (not clear)

** "world's" simplifies your sentence.

** Bush is not Bush.. he is "President Bush" until the day he dies. President Reagan; President Ford is how we write of former-presidents.

** You cannot, categorically, say that all of these countries are dangerous. You need to qualify (soften) your statement. The word "potentially" softens the statement. China could be a dangerous nation or it could become a trading nations...its situation is not clear.

** Also, are all of the Arab nations "dangerous"? Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia can be thought of as Arabic nations. Do you think they are ALL dangerous?

Today the relationship between humans and nature is something we all should consider seriously since environmental pollution has become a global problem. The Japanese harmonic attitude towards nature under the influence of Shinto, Buddhism(especially Zen Buddhism), and Chinese philosophies such as Taoism are now focused on by the people in the west. All kinds of martial arts are now very popular around the world as they are good for both physical and mental training.

** "Japanese harmonic attitude" is a definite thing.

** Also, what is Japan doing about "environmental pollution"? Japanese beaches are famous for being "environmentally" terrible...and Japanese trucks on the Highways do not have to have follow any standards for their terrible exhaust. What is the government doing about this?

Our conclusion is that Japan has influenced the west in many areas and will continue to do so. With advanced technology, such as the Internet, it will become easier to exchange information. As a result, Japanese and western culture will mix creating a new culture.

**Use MS-WORD "spell-check" to help you correct mis-spellings.

** Internet is a definite thing and concept

** Simplify.."Japanese and western...not "Japanese culture and western ..."

Questions for further research by your group and comments on your Executive Report

The following questions and comments should help you to continue and complete your report. If you wish to discuss any of these questions with the instructor, please contact him by e-mail. In addition to the questions listed here, you can, of course, think of your questions to complete you work.

If you use an article from a magazine, newspaper or online (Internet) source, you need to identify where that source came from. We will talk more about "sources of information" in class meetings.

When Europeans first came to Nagasaki what kind of "trade" or "business" did they want to engage in with the Japanese? Were they welcomed by the Japanese at that time?

Christianity has had an enormous influence in Europe, North and South America and in many nations such as Australia and the Philippines where European countries had a strong influence. The Tokugawa shogunate "kicked out" the Christians or drove them to practice in secret. In spite of this treatment, there seems to have been some influence on Japan by Christianity. Where has this influence been the strongest?

Now for a difficult question! During the First World War, Japan fought on the side of the allies (e.g. Great Britain and the United States). However, in the Second World War, the exact opposite occurred and former friends became enemies. And, now again, in 1996, these former enemies are very close friends on a variety of levels. So, what factors seemed to make the Japanese and their former allies after World War I become enemies by 1941? HINT: What was the situation with the other countries in East Asia (e.g. China; Russia; etc.) during this time period?

Are you so sure that the Japanese haven't invented "anything new"? That is a common "cliche"...meaning most people believe this, even the Japanese, but is it completely true? What does "invention" mean? Does it mean only things; e.g. cars, walkmans etc. Or can it mean to invent "a way of doing things"...e.g. "Just in Time Production". In order to become a powerful economic nation, is it necessary to "invent something"?

Are China, North Korea and all the Arab nations truly "dangerous"? Perhaps from China's point-of-view, the United States is dangerous? You need to be careful when making "generalized statements' about a country or people. Many people believe, for example, that the United States is a dangerous country in international affairs...e.g. Vietnam, Korean War, Iraq War, Grenada, etc. Are you, therefore, sure that Japan absolutely needs the American army on Japanese soil?

Is Japan a Powerful country? You said it was. However, let us examine what that means. Does Japan have a major army, navy, and air force? Does Japan have a large military establishment? Is "economic power", alone, really "power"? Please think about his question. By your definition, Switzerland should be a major power since it is a powerful "economic country".
