A study of the U.S. involvement in East Asia and Japan.

Part 1: Executive Overview

The recent rape incident by the U.S. military workers has made us think about the importance of the U.S. military base in Japan.

We are not sure if the existance of the U.S.military base is important or not. When we think of this issue, we have to consider such thing as U.S.-Japan relationship, the problem dealing with the Japanese constitution about the Japanese defence force, and more.

The U.S. military base in Japan gives pressures to the other countries, especially in asia when there are some conflicts. Japanese government wants to keep present situation because it will help prevent a conflict. Since the Japanese constitution states that Japan will not to go war again, the U.S. military base is there to defend Japan if some how Japan gets involved in a war. But if you think of this defence theory, there is always a question of why the Japanese defence force is ranked so high among the world military forces. Some american officer says if the U.S. army is to retrieve from Japan, Japan will build up their army bigger eventhough it is already so strong. So in some way we can say that the U.S. army works as a watchdog over Japanese army. Stationing of the U.S. military in Japan also rises a question of Japan being involved indirectly to a war. For example the conflicts in teh Korean and the Vietnam war. Since this problem involves other countries, what they think about this issue will be important also. In this paper we are going to find out the following:

  1. size and the duty of the U.S. military force stationed in Japan today.
  2. their roles in the past, such as involvement in the Korean and the vietnam war.
  3. the relationships between teh U.S. military and the Japanee defence force.
  4. the things we have to do about this issue.
  5. the things we have to consider when we think of these issues

Since the Japan- U.S. relationship is so important to not only us but to the whole world also, we have to think seriously about this issue.

It may be important to have the U.S. military base in Japan. But with the incident like that in Okinawa, we are beginning to doubt about it. If we are going to get rid of the base in Japan, we have to consider the problems which will arise by doing so. We will try to find out these things in our research.

Your original Executive Report with grammatical corrections

Grammatical corrections and comments
Suggested Correction Short grammatical or logical explanation
The recent rape incident by the U.S. military workers has made us think about the importance of the U.S. military base in Japan.

We are not sure if the existence of the U.S. military bases is important or not. When we think of this issue, we have to consider such things as the U.S.-Japan relationship; the problem dealing with the Japanese constitution and about the Japanese defense force, and more.

"Japan" requires a capital "J" and so does "Japanese". These are called "proper nouns" in English.

** use MS-WORD spellcheck "existence" "defense"

** "to consider such things" should be plural...you should separate your series of points with a semicolon ";" and the final item "about the Japanese..." requires "and".

The U.S. military bases in Japan gives pressure to other countries, especially in Asia when there are some conflicts. The Japanese government wants to keep the present situation because it will help prevent a conflict. Since the Japanese constitution states that Japan will not to go war again, the U.S. military bases are there to defend Japan if somehow Japan gets involved in a war. But if you think of this defense theory, there is always the question of why the Japanese defense force is ranked so high among the world military forces. Some American officers say if the U.S. army leaves Japan, that Japan will build up their army even though it is already so strong. So in some way we can say that the U.S. army works as a watchdog over the Japanese army. The stationing of the U.S. military in Japan also raises a question of Japan being involved indirectly in a war. The conflicts in the Korean and the Vietnam Wars are recent examples. Since this problem involves other countries, what they think about this issue will be important also. In this paper we are going to find out the following: Always capitalize countries "Japan" "American" "Japanese" and continents "Asia" ..any place names (locations; e.g. Urayasu).

** "military bases" because there are more than one in Japan.

** Be careful on using or not using "the". When something is definite as in "Japanese government" or "present situation" use "the" .. Careful with spelling...use MS-WORD spellcheck "defense"

** "Some" is plural, therefore "American officers"

** "leaves" (goes away from)

** "raises" not "rises"...see your dictionary..

** "The conflicts in the Korean and Vietnam...." Original sentence had no verb. It has been restructured to emphasize "Korean" and "Vietnam" Wars as "examples.

  1. size and the duty of the U.S. military force stationed in Japan today.
  2. their roles in the past, such as involvement in the Korean and the Vietnam War.
  3. the relationships between the U.S. military and the Japanese Defense Force.
  4. the things we have to do about this issue.
  5. the things we have to consider when we think of these issues
"Vietnam War" is a proper name defining a particular war as is "Korean War" or U.S. Civil War".."Japanese Defense Force" is also a proper noun defining a particular thing...probably should be capitalized

** I am not certain I understand the differences between "the things we have to do ....and "the things we have to consider"...The meanings of the two last sentences seem very similar.

Since the Japan- U.S. relationship is so important not only to ourselves but, also, to the whole world, we have to think seriously about this issue.

It may be important to have the U.S. military bases in Japan. But with the incident like that in Okinawa, we are beginning to doubt it. If we are going to get rid of bases in Japan, we have to consider the problems which will arise by doing so.

"not only to ourselves" reads much better than "to not only us"

** "also" should be moved to after .."but"..

** "military bases" is plural.

** "doubt it" and not "doubt about it".

Questions for further research by your group and comments on your Executive Report

The following questions and comments should help you to continue and complete your report. If you wish to discuss any of these questions with the instructor, please contact him by e-mail. In addition to the questions listed here, you can, of course, think of your questions to complete you work.

If you use an article from a magazine, newspaper or online (Internet) source, you need to identify where that source came from. We will talk more about "sources of information" in class meetings.

What is the size of the American armed forces stationed in Japan? Has this size been going up or going down over the past 10-15 years. Also, has the Japanese Defense Force been going up or down in size? And, again, what is the size of this Japanese Defense force?

Historically, what have been the primary duties of the American armed forces stationed in Japan..besides involvement with the Korean and Vietnam conflicts? During both of these conflicts, how much direct involvement was there by the Japanese Defense forces? "Direct involvement" means, in this usage, fighting in a conflict (war); providing technical support either in the location of the conflict or from Japan or elsewhere and/or providing medical support, or support with providing American troops with food and things directly related to the conflicts? In other words, has the involvement of the Japanese Defense forces been increasing internationally?

If the United States completely left Japan (100%) would Japan be assured of peace? Do you believe Japanese citizens would allow the constitution to be changed so that Japan could, once again, develop an armed forces as occurred before World War II? Are there political groups in Japan that want the U.S. troops to completely leave? Who are they and what alternatives do they offer for the defense of Japan if the U.S. troops were to leave?

There are some unstable regimes in the Far East, for example-North Korea...and maybe China, also. If the U.S. were to leave Japan under pressure, and one of these unstable countries became aggressive, would or could the Japanese Defense forces protect Japan without help from the outside (e.g. U.S.)?

Is the Japanese Defense force popular in Japan? Do young people want to join the Defense forces? Try and find this out. Are there government or newspaper surveys asking this question?

President Clinton has strongly reduced the number of American armed forces bases, worldwide. He has reduced the number of bases in the Philippines and in southeast Asia. Do you think it is realistic to have the U.S. militarily "pull-out" of East Asia 100%. If the U.S. were to "pull-out", who or what would protect East Asia. United Nations? They didn't do such a good job in Bosnia? Think about some alternatives to having the U.S., alone, protect East Asia. For example, New Zealand doesn't want the U.S. or anyone to protect them.
