2008 Donna Mercado Kim Scholarship and Aloha Spirit Awardees
In 1983, then Representative Kim established the Donna Mercado Kim Scholarship as a way to give back to our island community and youth. For 25 years Senator Kim has contributed over a $100,000 in support of District 14 graduates. Scholarships were instrumental in helping Senator Kim with her college cost and it is also helping to defray college expenses for her son Micah. She knows and understands the growing expenses many parents have to face to furnish their children with a higher education, especially in these very trying economic times. It provides her with great pleasure knowing that these scholarships will make it a little bit easier to afford a college degree for three worthy families and students from Farrington, Moanalua and Aiea High School by awarding them the 2008 Donna Mercado Kim Scholarships.
These three scholarships are awarded annually to students who have a financial need and who distinguish themselves in their academic classes as well as in their extracurricular activities. Senator Kim is exceptionally proud of these three students and knows that they will be a credit to their families and community when they head off to college in the fall.
Besides the college scholarships, Senator Kim also recognizes three middle school students from Dole, Aiea and Moanalua Middle School with an Aloha Spirit Award each year. Each middle school picks one student who through their actions and deeds best exemplify the principles of the Aloha Spirit. Award winners are added to the Aloha Spirit perpetual plaque that is displayed in the school's offices and are given individual plaques along with a monetary prize and savings bond.
