AND I SEZ:

In the 60's , whenever you had to make a run to the airport, there were two places you would stop by before leaving or when you arrived. It would either be Kelly's Coffee Shop or Byron's Drive-In. The choice would depend on whether you had time to sit down and shoot the breeze (Kellys) or eat and run (Byrons). Byrons was always a good choice as they had a wide selection of breakfast, sandwich and plate offerings. The only Drive-in competion was from the now, long defunct, Jet Burger Drive-in on Lagoon Drive.

Byron's Drive-In gives us a glimpse into the past when drive-ins were designed with a special flair. The distinctive roofline was the beacon for plate lunchers in the airport area. Now in the 90's the image is somewhat tarnished, the place a little run down. But how's the food?

I had not been to Byrons in years prior to this review. The shrimp burgers and hamburgers used to be the big sellers. Judging from what people were ordering, they're still quite popular. I know of an office in the Manoa area that will make special lunch runs to Byrons to get the shrimp burgers. I visited twice, the shrimp burger I ordered was good as I remembered. You know how sometimes things that you thought were good a while back don't taste as good when you try it again? Not the case here- the shrimp burger was delicous! The cole slaw wasn't bad either.

I also had their mahi mahi plate, typical deep fried, batter coated frozen fish- par for the course. They also offer grilled Ahi, ono or salmon at $6.05 a plate- they would probably have been better choices.

So if you want to go down memory lane, order a shrimp burger, fries and coke, close your eyes and listen to the oldies at 107.9 FM. If you want to be daring, try a non- conventional offering like turkey jook.

Food: (plate lunch is par for the course)

Service: 1/2 ( friendly and efficient)

Atmosphere: ( lots of tables but they have to keep the area cleaner)

Value: (order the shrimp burger)
