Yes- toss greens with thousand island dressing Specialties: Daily massive specials- see below comments. AND I SEZ: There are large plate lunches, there are big plate lunches, but there is only one MASSIVE plate lunch, and it can only be found at Masu's. How big is massive? I think someone weighed one of their specials and it came in I believe at over 3 pounds! Feed your family of four could be a Masu's quote! The legendary Masu's began around 1973. I remember it being on Kamaile street in the Ala Moana area. This street no longer exists as it was absorbed into a proposed commercial project and never saw fruition. (The area is now a big empty lot in the middle of a busy urban area.) I think Masu's moved to its current location sometime in the early 90's and has not stopped serving its trademark plates since. Aside from the typical chili dog plate, beef curry, pork cutlet, etc. Masu's makes a daily massive special. Example: "Frank B. Shaner's Aloha Friday Bento: Charcoal Broiled Sirloin Steak, Teriyaki Sauce, Baked Baby Lobster tail, Fried Chicken, FriedShrimp Tempura, Baked Spam, Shoyu Hot Dogs, and Crab Potato Salad." The spam serving I swear is 1/2 can. Cost: $6.85. Mind you, this is all on one plate! Many of the daily specials are based on a local personality theme. Frank B. Shaner is a local DJ. On the day I went to Masu's, the special was Charbroiled New York Steak, Teriyaki sauce, fried chicken and Fried shrimp tempura, mac salad. Unfortunately by the time I wnet, the steak was gone so they gave me a laulau instead. they were also out of toss salad. My friend Tim, (local dairy executive) had a hamburger steak plate ($3.95) gambling that I wouldn't be able to finish my plate. He was right. Hey- laulau instead of steak, a healthy alternative? Yeah, right! Masu's did not disappoint. the laulau was tasty, just the right amount of moisture and tender meat inside. Not too fatty (if that's possible). The shrimp was more of a breaded shrimp rather than a tempura, but still pretty good. I gave the chicken to Tim who devoured it readily- he said it was pretty good. He liked the hamburger steak. Cost: $6.75.
Masu's combo plate- it's bigger than it looks!
I've also had Masu's chili dog plate, that one is a good scratch chili with some bite. A little more than Rainbow's and just as good. Note: Masu's also sells unstrained fresh Waipio Poi for $3.40 a pound. They also have an aloha weekend special consisting of Laulau, Kalua pig, Teri chicken, baked spam, and shoyu hot dogs for $6.80.
