Name: Sunnyside Address: 1017 Kilani Ave, Wahiawa, HI (Central Oahu) Call: 621-7188 Plate Lunch Prices: $3.80 to $5.25 (Most around $4.25) Hours: 7:30am to 9:00 pm Macaroni Salad Alternative?- no mac salad Specialties: Fried Rice, Pies AND I SEZ: Wahiawa is a military town. Because of its proximity to Wheeler Air Force Base and Schofield Barracks (Army) you'll find lots of fast food places,(MacDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, ad nauseum) lots of pizza places, lots of eating places period. Sunnyside is a long time local Central Oahu establishment that seems to have been around forever. Unlike most places, they do not offer mac salad, only mixed vegetables (Mo'healthy, yeah!). Pretty good selection of plates including Beef Stew, Beef Curry, Pork Tofu, Chicken Cutlet, Fried Shrimp, etc. The portions are just right, not generous but not skimpy.
Wow! Two all beef patties!
The Hamburger Steak plate I had was tastey, seems like they make their own patties. The gravey was not overpowering but was a nice complement to the rice and hamburger. The mixed veggies worked in well with the rest of the plate. I've also had their mahimahi plate, they make it with an egg batter coating ( as opposed to deep fried breaded), it was equally as good. Most drive-ins might offer a turnover for dessert, maybe ice cream. Sunnyside specializes in pies, and their pies are GOOD! They have a chocolate pudding pie, and several fruit pies, apple, peach, pear and banana. What makes the fruit pies nice is that you can get them with a double crust. To me you can always judge a pie by the quality of the crust. Sunneyside's pie crust is really tastey, it's not surprising that they capitalize on this with the double crust offerings. They sell the pies by the slice so there is no excuse for not topping off a good meal with a nice dessert. Food: Pies bump it to 3. Service: 1/2 Atmosphere: 1/2 Small enclosed eating area is pleasent. Value: Pies make the place a winner.
