Text

Line Breaks (CTRL+L) Selection reduces the amount of line break to the text format, allowing an un-broken reading of active text (other than the emphasis from sentence punctuation).

Hawaiian Syntax Selection indicates that the text document currently open is written in the Hawaiian Language, which signals the program to pronounce the words as Hawaiian.

    • Words containing characters other than those used by the Hawaiian alphabet (A, E, H, I, K, L, M, N, P, O, U, and W) are pronounced in English.
    • You need to toggle off this option when reading English-only documents, as it would misinterpret English words which contain only letters in the Hawaiian alphabet as being Hawaiian words. For instance, the word "home" would be mispronounced "ho-may".

Pronounce (CTRL+P) Select to customize or correct the pronunciation of a single word.

Define Abbreviation Selection allows pronunciation of term.

Definition: (CTRL+D) Downloads Webster's definition for the highlighted word from the Internet. Obviously, requires an active connection to the Internet.

Synonym: Downloads a synonym for the highlighted word from the Internet.

Unique Word List sCreates a list of unique words based on the current document. This feature is useful for creating document-specific phonetic dictionaries. Just rename your new.dic file and listen to the list of unique words, correcting the mispronounced words as you go. The new new.dic file will contain phonetic misspellings which may be distributed with the etext to ensure proper pronunciation. See the BOK scripting reference for tips how to attach a document dictionary to a specific etext.

Reading Clipboard Text and Web Pages

HELP Read has three modes:

    • Text: where you open and read a normal text file. To open a file, press CTRL-O.
    • Clipboard: HELP Read automatically pastes text into the document and begins reading each time the Clipboard is updated. To read the Clipboard, press F2.
    • Web: HELP Read copies and reads text from current Web page you're viewing with Netscape® or Microsoft Internet Explorer®. To read the current Web page, press CTRL-W. Note: this feature only works when either Web browser is running on your PC. The Preferences dialog contains an option to automatically load and read Web page text each time you change Web pages.

By default, HELP Read opens the document that you were reading the last time you ran the program. If the program is unable to load this program (for instance, if you were in Web mode before and now Web isn't active), HELP Read will load and read the Clipboard text.

Exploring the Hawaiian Language

One of the unique features of HELP Read is its ability to pronounce Hawaiian words. While it is not possible for any English-language product to completely capture the subtle nuances of any other language, the program does introduce you to the Hawaiian language accurately.

HELP Read has two Language Syntax modes: English and Hawaiian. While the program can read mixed language documents, you should toggle this feature to suit the text of the active document. If you are reading English text, then you should turn off the Hawaiian syntax feature. Otherwise, words which contain only letters contained in the Hawaiian alphabit will be mispronounced. In particular, the languages pronounce vowels and parse syllables quite differently.

To toggle the Hawaiian Syntax on and off, press Alt-T and H.

Reading Text from Microsoft Word®

One of the book scripts included with HELP Read is winword.bok. If you open this file, the program will copy and read aloud the text of whatever document you're editing with Microsoft Word®. This is the equivilent of placing HELP Read in clipboard mode and copying the contents of the Word document. This script may be edited (book scripts are simple text files) to read text from any program.
