Course Description for Spanish III

Curriculum

The course will be posted and conducted in Spanish.

The course will address certain standards and benchmarks in the subjects of Technology, Fine Arts. Social Studies, Language Arts and World Languages listed in the Hawaii State Content Standards.The World Language Standards and benchmarks come for the stage two section. Note, if you need acrobat reader, ,it can be downloaded form the D.O.E. Home Page. These standards are closely aligned with National Standards. Students will continue to develop communication skills and cultural concepts as they relate to the Spanish language and culture. There will be emphasis both on the culture of Spain and on Latin America. Students will engage in a variety of online and off line activities to accomplish the assigned tasks. 1 Credit Course

Objectives

1. Students will be able to correspond in Spanish with native speakers and other members of the class using chats, word processing and email in such a way that mistakes in grammar or vocabulary do not impede the communication of the ideas being expressed.

2. Students with the aid of references will be able to write compositions of at least 250 words using at least five different verb tenses which encompass the past, present and future tenses. Mistakes will be few and will not interfere with comprehension

3. Students will be able to understand and properly use basic terms relating to literature.

4. Students will be able to read sources in Spanish to learn about famous Hispanic artists and cultural topics related to them.

5. Students will be able to summarize in a comprehensible manner with few mistakes ideas expressed in Spanish videos that relate to readings of the course

6.. Students will be able to determine tense of verbs in all tenses by identifying verb endings used.

7. Students will be able to use such techniques as cross reference terms in the dictionary or recognition of cognates to decipher meaning when reading or listening to Spanish selections.

8. . Students will be able to name at least 10 Hispanic painters, and identify the following about one Latin American Painter and one Spanish Painter:

At least one characteristic of each of their paintings

The names of three paintings of each painter

One historical event that affected the work of each painter or that occurred during the painter's lifetime

How the painter's art expresses the culture of the time.

9. Students will be able to explain relationship between Diego Rivera, la Catrina and the Mexican Revolution as it relates to the story of " la Catrina" which will be read in class.

10. Students will be able to use effective search techniques on the world wide web to research aspects of Spanish culture on the web.

11. Students will be able to display an awareness of and an understanding of at least 10 key historic events of Spain and of Mexico.

 

 

Prerequisites:

 

Skills and knowledge required

Accessibility to and ability to use the Internet including the World Wide Web, e-mail, chat rooms and web page editors. If you have not acquired these skills, you may take an orientation to acquire these skills before beginning this class.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively to continue to develop communication skills as well as cultural understandings as they relate to the Spanish speaking world

Basic knowledge in the Spanish language. The equivalent of two years of high school study. Students should be able to carry functions listed in the K-3 and 4-5 benchmarks such as communicating about everyday common topics in the past, present or future tenses.

 

Materials required

The Amsco III notebook Approximate cost $15.00. They will be ordered and sent to you.

A VCR

A cassette tape recorder

A computer powerful enough to access and use WEBCT (should be three or more gigabytes)

You will also borrow or buy the book called ' "la Catrina" as well as the accompanying workbook. You will also borrow the accompanying videos.

 

Time required

You will not be required to report the hours spent doing the work. However, it is recommended that you allow at least 8 hours a week including homework and online time to complete the tasks. Because you will not be meeting in person with your other classmates or your instructor you will spend more time in independent study than you may be accustomed to doing. Most high school classes meet for at least 4 hours and require at least 1/2 hr of homework per night. You should plan to spend 8 hrs.a week on this course. One hour of this time will be spent in weekly chats.

 

Assessment

Completion of tasks according to the rubrics will determine the final grade.

Interviewing and dialoguing with Spanish speakers through:

Taped interviews, chats and online conversations,

Participating in community events,

Doing research on the web

Completing exercises in the workbook.

Taking online tests

 

Students will mail work to me or post their work to bulletin boards, list serves,and web pages.
